The Cove of Lake Geneva's Blog

The Cove is a Toys for Tots Drop-Off Location

What better way to get in the Christmas spirit this year then to help someone in need? Well that’s just what we are doing here at The Cove of Lake Geneva and we would love your help.

Through the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program, The Cove will once again be accepting new, unwrapped toys that will be distributed to the children in the community to help them experience the joys of Christmas.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s goal with the ‘Toys for Tots Program’ is to promote a message of hope to the less fortunate children. They do it with the anticipation that these children will grow up to become responsible citizens by learning about the generous gifts community members can bring to one another.

The ultimate success of this program depends on the generosity of the community and their gracious donations, with not only the intention to help children in need, but to unite all members of this community.

The toy collection will run from November to December here at The Cove.

Stay at The Cove of Lake Geneva and 'Beat the Heat'!

The Cove of Lake Geneva is once again a proud sponsor of Southeastern Wisconsin’s ‘Beat the Heat’
program this summer!

‘Beat the Heat’ is a safe, controlled environment where all licensed drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 are given an opportunity to drag race against area police officers and their friends. ‘Beat the Heat’ takes place at the Union Grove Raceway on select Saturdays throughout the summer (see the upcoming races below).

Here’s what the program is about:

This program was originally designed to educate youth about the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse while operating a vehicle, and has evolved into a program that keeps teens from illegally drag racing, which is equally as dangerous. So rather than street racing, this gives teens a safe and controlled environment to fulfill their need for racing at high speeds.

Here’s how it works:

Licensed drivers are invited to come out to the track on race day, where they will need to sign up. If you’re under the age of 16, you will need to have a parent or legal guardian with you the first time to get you signed up. Next, you will have your vehicle inspected to make sure it meets all the guidelines set by NHRA. If you’ve never raced here before, and want to learn a little more about what to expect, there will be police officers and other racers available to talk you through what to expect. Then it’s time to hit the track! Trophies are awarded at every race and awards are given to the top point earners at the end of the season.

Upcoming Races held from 11am to 3pm:

• July 23rd
• August 6th
• August 13th
• August 27th
• September 24th

For more information about ‘Beat the Heat’, visit www.sewbeatheat.org.

Traveling with Children? Be Sure to Book a Kid-Friendly Hotel!

When traveling with children, your hotel room will most likely get a lot of use due to naps, changing clothes, meal and snack times, etc. At the same time, you will also want to book a hotel room that is close to activities, as children tend to get worn out more quickly with lots of transportation, and you will want them fresh for the activities you have planned.

Below are a few kid-friendly features you should look for when booking your room:

• Large rooms that will give your kids enough room to move around and play.
• A separate seating area away from the beds/bedrooms that will allow the adults a place to hang out while children nap.
• Kid friendly restaurants that are onsite, or within walking distance, to avoid having to get kids in and out of the car, which can sometimes be a hassle within itself.
• A pool and/or other kid friendly amenities such as organized children’s activities.
• Free wireless internet, as it’s a great and quiet way for you to be entertained while your children are asleep.
• A refrigerator that will come in handy for storing drinks and refrigerated snacks.
• A kitchen that can be used to cook meals and snacks. This is also a plus because your family will save money by not having to eat out at every meal.
• A location which is within walking distance to markets, restaurants, coffee shops, etc., to pick up quick essentials.

Overall, whatever your budget, you should look for an accommodation in a central location that is close to attractions and offers easily accessible transportation or is so close to attractions, no transportation is needed.

If you are planning a summer vacation this year to Lake Geneva and are looking for a hotel which encompasses the above features, but sure to check out The Cove of Lake Geneva at www.cove-lake-geneva.com.

Holiday Story Contest Winner

We had recently asked you to submit your funny, embarrassing, dreadful, or outrageous story from this holiday season for your chance to win a two night stay at The Cove of Lake Geneva! The top three stories have since been voted on and the following story is the winner of our contest:

This holiday season was pretty awesome all around.  Between my wife and I, we ended up celebrating five different Christmases between both of our families - and our parents aren't even divorced.  Almost all of them went smoothly... with one exception.

Shortly after December 25th had actually passed, my wife and I drove to visit her parents and see some of our friends in Nebraska.  We're from Minnesota so it's only about a 6-hour drive.  We had spent all of our other "Christmases" near home so this was our opportunity to go back to the town where my wife grew up and celebrate with her family.  If only I'd known what I was about to see...

On the first morning of our visit, we woke up a little bit on the late side.  We stay with her parents in my wife's old bedroom when we come to town.  As I was walking down the hall toward the kitchen, my Father-in-Law was walking in front of me.  I don't remember why it caught my eye, but I noticed that I really liked his jeans and thought briefly that I'd like to have a pair like them.  So I did what every normal person does, I zoomed in my vision on the tag on the back of the pants... it read "Aeropostale".  Making that mental note, I thought to myself "Wow, he went shopping at Aeropostale?"  My Father-in-Law is a full-blooded Italian man in his late 60's ... not exactly Aeropostale's key demographic.

Then I realized that they looked a tad familiar... WAY too familiar.  In fact, I realized, I had owned a pair EXACTLY LIKE THEM.  And then the kicker.... I realized I last saw those jeans LAST CHRISTMAS, at my in-laws house, when I had hung them up to dry after SHOVELING THEIR DRIVEWAY!

MY FATHER-IN-LAW HAD STOLEN MY PANTS!!!!

Although I was a little flabbergasted, I thought to myself "I should give him the benefit of the doubt.  Maybe they just look like my old jeans."  And I did, until later that day when I pondered the reality that my father-in-law is a full 6 inches shorter than me.  My jeans would never fit him... they'd be way too long.  The only way that he could pull off this ridiculous feat would be to have the jeans hemmed.  So I snuck a quick peek at the bottoms of the pants when he leaned back in his chair at the kitchen table .... Sure enough, the thread used was DARK BLACK, which was a stark contrast to the light tan that was used on the rest of the pants.  There it was... the smoking gun.

I thought briefly about saying something to him but then thought he'd probably be a little embarrassed (and I'm a little scared of him).  So I let it go and didn't say anything.  However, I couldn't keep from telling my wife and our friends who we saw later that night - it was too much to hold inside.

As though that weren't bad enough, my father-in-law proceeded to wear those jeans in front of me for THE ENTIRE WEEKEND!!!  Not only was it a little gross that he wore the same pants three days in a row, but that's just mean.  I mean, seriously, he had to have known they weren't his jeans when he had them hemmed.  And they probably got tipped off when my wife called their house after we left last Christmas and asked if they'd seen my missing jeans.  "No," they replied.  "We don't see his jeans anywhere here.  Maybe you lost them somewhere else."  Yeah...  right.

My two post-holiday wishes for all of you are: 1) I hope your in-laws didn't steal and re-tailor any of your clothes this year, and 2) if they did, I sure hope they had the decency to at least try to hide if from you!

Unbelievable.

Thank you all for your entries and congratulations to our winner!

The ski hill offers 20 ski runs and 14 ski lifts on over 90 acres of property. This hill provides more beginner and intermediate ski experiences rather than advanced ones, making it perfect for a family consisting of all ages.

Snowmobiling trails are located throughout Walworth County and connect to surrounding county trail systems. The maintenance, marking, and grooming of all the trails, are performed by local snowmobile clubs, making for the most enjoyable trails around this area.

By joining a local snowmobiling club (a family membership is $25 annually) you will receive maps, badges, and state and local newsletter subscriptions. Also, a member of any club is welcome on any other club trail in Wisconsin.

So come spend the weekend in Lake Geneva and enjoy the beautifully groomed trails of Walworth County.

Ice Fishing
No winter would be complete without spending a day on Geneva Lake ice fishing. So head on over to Lake Geneva and gear up for a weekend out on the lake.

Geneva Lake offers ice shanty rentals, as well as the largest selection of ice jigs and ice lures in Wisconsin, with over 80,000 in stock. You can even sign up for a guided ice fishing tour of Geneva Lake so you are sure to find the best spots for the fish you are looking to catch.
